In the first two minutes, what is one specific technique you would use to make the content immediately relevant to your learners and secure their buy-in?

Lecture Sequencing (Gagné): For this same session, would you be more inclined to start by lecturing, asking about your learners’ prior experiences (Event #3 in Gagné’s 9 Events) or by demonstrating a key concept (Event #4 in Gagné’s 9 Events)? Justify your choice and explain how it would set the tone.

Facilitation Challenges: You’re leading a training on your chosen topic for this class. You begin by lecturing. A few minutes in, you see eyes glazing over and people checking their phones. You realize you’ve failed to show them why this tool is important to them. What do you do to immediately pivot, demonstrate value, and re-capture the room’s attention? How could you design your lecture to prevent this?

ADULT LEARNING FOCUS: Managing Cognition and Challenge

Level of Challenge: Participants in mandatory training may seem passive if they view the session as redundant or merely a knowledge test. Yet these sessions are meant to help people recognize real world situations and respond appropriately. How does the level of cognitive challenge in a mandatory training session (for example, basic recall vs. analysis, synthesis, or evaluation) affect its overall effectiveness (e.g., knowledge acquisition, driving practical application, or lasting behavior change)? What facilitation techniques could you use to adjust the level of challenge? Draw on examples from your own experience or strategies learned to illustrate your points.

Leveraging Adult Experience: Adult learners bring a deep well of professional and life experience into any training session. How does failing to tap into their prior knowledge risk disengaging or even disrespecting them? Considering their rich background, under what circumstances might a facilitator strategically limit or even skip the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy (‘Remember,’ ‘Understand’)? What is the value in trusting your learners to possess foundational knowledge and dedicating more time to higher-order thinking?

Facilitation Challenge: Let’s say that you are used to teaching children and are partway through a lecture with corporate managers when you realize that your lecture is not resonating—the tone is wrong, the examples are too simple, and you’re losing them. Give context and describe what you would do in that moment to pivot your style and re-engage the group.

FACILITATION DYNAMICS FOCUS – The Live Facilitator: Juggling Roles

Facilitating vs. Presenting: A presenter can look at their slides, but a facilitator must look at their audience. How does “reading the room” serve as the facilitator’s primary method for collecting feedback, and what specific adaptive move could you make in response to observing cues of (a) widespread confusion or (b) growing excitement?

The Taskmaster Dilemma: You are facilitating a session and a participant raises a valid but highly specific edge case that applies only to their small team. They are passionate about it and want to dive deep, but you can see the rest of the group disengaging. How do you balance your duty to validate the individual’s concern with your “taskmaster” role of keeping the content relevant for the entire group? Describe your in-the-moment thought process.

Facilitation Challenge: You are facilitating a “lessons learned” session with a project team, and the team’s senior manager is in the room. The manager speaks first, offering a strong opinion that frames the project’s challenges in a particular way. After he speaks, the room goes silent, and you sense the team has conflicting perspectives but is hesitant to share them. What is your strategy to navigate this power dynamic and encourage honest feedback?

Resources

Lesson Planning | Centre for Teaching Excellence.
